The Charlton Athletic Women’s team suffered a 2-1 loss to league leaders Manchester United after a close encounter at the Oakwood on Sunday afternoon.
The Addicks fought brilliantly in a close contest, but a Katie Zelem penalty and Jess Sisgsworth header saw the visitors claim all three points.
Charlton did very well to stifle all Manchester United attacks in the first half, defending brilliantly as a team unit.
The first shot of the game came Charlton’s way in the 7th minute, Sara Eggesvik fed the ball through to Liz Ejupi, but her effort flew over Siobhan Chamberlain’s bar.
Two minutes later Charlton were attacking at United again, Charlotte Gurr sent in a brilliant cross towards Eggesvik, but Alex Greenwood did well to intercept and clear the danger.
One minute later Amelia Ritchie made an outstanding block to prevent a certain goal.
Zelem lobbed the ball past Katie Startup but Amelia Ritchie sprinted back to block the shot and clear it off the line.
Minutes later Startup made a superb double stop by parrying away Zelem’s free-kick and saving Greenwood’s powerful strike straight after.
United dominated possession throughout the half but Charlton remained strong.
Startup was called into action shortly after the restart, a ball was played in over the top for Lauren James but Startup sprinted off her line and did well to collect the ball.
United were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute when Gurr handled the ball in the area, Zelem converted the spot kick to give the visitors the lead.
Seven minutes later it was 2-0 to the visitors, Zelem swung in a corner and Sigsworth headed in from close range.
With twenty minutes to go, Graham muscled past a United defender to get through on goal, but the remaining defenders did well to put the striker off so her shot rolled into the hands of Chamberlain.
Two minutes later a brilliant piece of skill from Ejupi saw her turn and slam the ball towards goal, but the strike was whiskers wide of the far post.
With eight minutes left Kit Graham scored the goal of the game, the striker picked the ball up at the edge of the box and beautifully curled the ball past Chamberlain to make it an exciting ending.
Charlton next face London Bees away from home on Sunday 31 March, as the Addicks look to bounce back from Sunday’s narrow defeat.
The next home game for the Addicks is against second placed Tottenham Hotspur, on Sunday 21 April.
