Charlton Athletic Women’s development team suffered a cruel defeat on penalties against Blackburn in the Reserve Cup Final on Sunday.

The first half was heavily dominated by Blackburn Rovers with Stinson scoring an early goal to give Blackburn the lead just five minutes into the game. The captain’s freekick from 25 yards out flew over the top of the Addicks keeper.

Blackburn continued to test the Addicks with a dangerous corner on 23 minutes almost catching the Addicks out and another close free kick on 26 minutes being cleared away before it could head towards the goal.

It was only on the 33rd  minute that the Addicks received the first corner of the game but Carpanini couldn’t connect onto Parreno-Espinosa’s cross.

Kelk performed a good stop just minutes later to prevent Pacitto giving Blackburn a 2-0 lead.

One of the best chances for the Addicks came on 35 minutes when Dorey’s pass connected to Parreno-Espinosa who was able to feed the ball through to O’Callaghan. Unfortunately, O’Callaghan couldn’t connect correctly onto the end of the ball and the shot ended wide and high of the goal.

The second half was a lot better for the Addicks who came out with a point to prove. With a lot of early possession, Charlton tried to get the ball into Blackburn’s half who’s defence stood strong.

The Addicks got their goal on 69 minutes to equalise up the game. After a corner was swung in Blackburn threw everyone to initially block shots but after bouncing around the ball fell to Georgia Pearch’s feet who fired the ball home in the left hand corner of the net.

Charlton Athletic Women gained confidence from the goal with Dorey’s shot on 75 minutes firing over the goal and and Jeffkins free-kick on 77 minutes following the same suit.

Despite attempts by both teams, the match couldn’t be settled in normal time and an additional 30 minutes was to be played.

One of the best chances in the game fell for the Addicks 3 minutes into the first half of extra time as Georgia Griffin’s received the ball over the top of the Blackburn defence but was only able to fire her shot direct to the keeper.

The Addicks defence held strong with Pacitto’s chance for Blackburn 10 minutes into the first half of extra time came from a long distance shot and went over the bar.

With less than 13 minutes left to play the Addicks were given a great opportunity with a handball right on the edge of the box. Dorey stepped up and fired a strong shot which Size, the Blackburn stopper had to tip over the bar.

120 minutes of football couldn’t separate the two sides and penalties awaited to decide the winner. Blackburn were successful in converting all of their penalties winning 3-1 to secure the Reserve Cup Final.

CHARLTON: Kelk, Carpanini, West, Jeffkins, Hayes, Parreno-Espinosa, Pearch (Dunning, 90), Jackson, O’Callaghan (Griffin, 46), Dorey, B. Hembrough (L. Hembrough, 98)
