A late equaliser denied the Charlton Women’s team a victory against Barnet at Uxbridge on Sunday, despite dominating the encounter.
Barnet took an early lead through the prolific Stacey Sowden but second half headers from Toni Alden and Fliss Gibbons put the Addicks in a deserved lead before substitute Renata Inniss grabbed a late leveller.
The Bees scored from the first piece of goalmouth action when Sowden raced onto a Cheryl Williams throughball, rounded the advancing Megen Lynch and slotted home after just four minutes.
The first half was rather uneventful, with neither keeper being fully stretched until the end of the period. Williams and Alex Keown went close for the hosts while Kit Graham’s long range effort was comfortable for Bees keeper Cherie Rowlands.
The Addicks were almost on level terms just before the interval when the ball broke to Gibbons, who cut in and shot but Rowlands got down to make a smart save.
The equaliser was not far away, though. On 51 minutes Gibbons won a free kick on the edge of the area and Bryan’s set piece was parried to left-back Alden, who looped a header over the crowd of players and into the net.
The visitors began to take a stranglehold on the game then and Bryan was unfortunate to see her shot drift wide after Graham had played her through.
Graham then had a few good chances, one after good play on the wing by right-back Sinead Boyer. Her centre found the sixteen-year-old on the penalty spot but she could not get her foot over the ball and it cleared the crossbar.
Courteney Gibson’s cross then found Graham unmarked but her header went over as well. The youngster then teed herself up from range but the effort met a similar fate to the previous two.
Charlton did make their pressure pay with 13 minutes remaining when Gibbons headed an Alden corner home at the near post.
They couldn’t quite take advantage, though, and substitute Inniss turned the leveller in after Sowden’s mazy run took her past two Addicks defenders in the box.
Charlton: Lynch, Boyer, Alden, Butler, Daniels, Dixson, Bailes, Graham (Clifford 88), Gibson, Gibbons, Bryan. Subs (not used): Bennett, Duggan.
